I just finished Richard Yate's Easter Parade while coming home on the train. Jeez. So bleak and harsh. Yet I never felt it to be cynical or unfair. I read the last page just as I came to my stop and I thought about how scary perceptive Yates is and how everything he writes just rings so true and he scares me everytime, hitting so close to home, and I wanted to burn his book and forget about it. I think it will take about a year for me to be ready to read his collection of short stories. Which author's books are you most afraid is like your life or how your life will turn out? Richard Yates or Paula Fox? Yeah, trick question. What? V.C. Andrews?
